Corridor and circulation areas

A University has a number of accommodation blocks for domestic and overseas students and needs to provide a safe and well lit environment, yet also maximum potential energy savings. The system must run without intervention from the occupants and operate on a continuous basis. There are a number of areas within the building to be controlled, ranging from entrance atria, staircases, corridors, and cloakrooms.

Solution

Luminaires used consist in the most part of controllable fluorescent lighting, either linear or recessed compact. Due to the varying degrees of natural daylight within each space, a number of different control strategies are employed to achieve the maximum savings, but at the same time ensuring appropriate lighting levels. Control is mainly via sensors that are used to provide occupancy detection combined with daylight harvesting. Time based overrides exist in some areas to provide a maintained "night light" level to encourage the feeling of safety.
